my history

i always sorta knew what touhou was (exposure thru otoMADs, bad apple, etc) but i started actively playing the games and reading into it when i was 13. i immediately loved the games and the music was unlike anything ive heard before. it was also my first real exposure to doujin culture and the incredible art and music that come from it. i think in general i'm a very "art and music"-oriented person... i've always gravitated towards video game music for example, so of course i would like the series that featured notoriously brilliant video game music.

like most people, i opted to start with Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. i pretty much went chronologically from there, clearing the games on easy first while alternating back and forth between the games i couldn't beat on normal mode. as of the present day, i have 11 hard mode 1CCs (...and +1 touhou 15 hard mode clear on pointdevice mode). i'm not sure when i went back to play the first 5 games, but i would definitely recommend that any upcoming touhou fan at least acknowledge the PC98 game canon.

Wtf Is A Touhou

touhou is a multimedia project spanning games, manga/other print works, and music CDs. each game follows a general story of "something unusual is happening in the land of gensokyo, i guess i gotta fly around and find the culprit so i can beat them up and invite them to a feast later". obviously that was just a silly generalization, though the games are *pretty* self-contained. the games are (mostly) bullet hell, which tends to drive people away, but hey it's more fun than you might think. if you aren't interested in playing the games, i highly recommend reading the dialogue, watching playthroughs, and listening to the music.

print works

touhou also has several official published manga titles, but there are NO official anime productions. any sort of anime you might see with touhou characters is in fact entirely fan-made! anyways, the manga titles tend to have a more relaxed structure that focuses more on character dynamics than a heavy plot. i wouldn't call it "slice of life", but to me it definitely feels like you're reading "Things Happen Sometimes: The Manga". there is a ton of nuance i'm leaving out obviously, but the takeaway here is that the manga publications do not adapt the story from the games and instead focus on worldbuilding and things in-between that would be difficult to put into the games (And sometimes, there is indeed a hint of plot).

when i say touhou has "other print works", i am referring to the publications that are more like books and guides to the world. "what the hell does that mean??" for example: Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red is a book written as a newspaper that exists in the world (with some additional ZUN commentary). these "other print works" take multiple forms including short stories, magazines, and things akin to a "field guide".

CDs

there are different types of music CDs. outside of the usual soundtrack CDs, there are also CDs that accompany some of the print works as well as CDs with stories. for the sake of simplicity, just focus on the ones with stories (ones that are under the "ZUN's Music Collection" label). most of them follow the banter of two university students who live in the normal world outside of gensokyo, with them often holding conversations about paranormal occurrences, science, and a tiny hint of philosophy. also they're definitely gay.

consider visiting the touhou wiki, especially since it is delisted from google searches at the moment. you can also find a comprehensive list of all of the official materials on the home page.

MUSIC RAMBLE ZONE

HRtP music opinions

Unsolicited Opinion Warning but i think (sometimes) the original hrtp ost kicks more ass than the akyuu/MS remasters. shoutouts to that one time oriental magician got stuck in my head for like 12 hours its such a haunting ass song especially when it goes quiet.. i admit im also pretty biased where some keys in music are more appealing to me than others like to me the akyuu version of konngaras theme is a little bit "eh" to me because the key was changed from the original. i think that og hrtp's music sounds actually more powerful in the context of its sound driver (MDRV98? correct me if im wrong). there are some exceptions though like the akyuu/MS ver of strange oriental discourse kicks so much assssss!!!!! i love music

new music ramble

i kinda hate whenever people are like "zuns music fell off since idolatrize world" what on earth are you talking about. saw a few people on touhou 18.5 ost's comments saying it was mid in some way and that is just so incorrect? hundredth black market is so fucking awesome and im sorry that some people cant see it... Another thing: MORE PEOPLE GOTTA TALK ABOUT TABOO JAPAN DISENTANGLEMENT?!?! ITS SO GOOD?!?!? Where are the taboo marionette arranges PLEA;SE also the concealed four seasons arrange had me doing backflips Wow i really think people should listen to zuns albums more

doujin music

you'll notice that i put a music player at the top of this webpage. you can at least look through the playlist (the top-right button) to see some of my favorite arranges.

i have a pretty strong bias towards EDM, particularly hardcore subgenres, but i'll listen to basically anything. tried to include a range of genres but it isn't exactly cohesive..

artists/circles i think are especially good:

  • MA.S ATTACK
  • CXR Record
  • Ecriss
  • sun3 FielD
  • PopKorn & Hara-Kara
  • 音召缶-OTOMEKAN-
  • Asomosphere
  • moro
  • Akatsuki Records
  • salvation by faith records

i don't tend to pick absolute "favorites" of anything, especially when i listen to a broad range of artists.

FEATURED ARRANGEMENT

Highly Responsive To Prayers

i think a lot of people are sleeping on HRtP actually. fun but hard for sure (That Stupid Ball That You Accidentally Kick Right Into Your Face For The 5th Time). i remember when i first picked up the game after being a passive observer of it i was like "wait this is actually fun" and i really came to appreciate it more. i love the sariel boss fight, like when the color palette changes?? peak. 'twas a struggle to actually 1cc, but i managed it somehow...

FEATURED PC98 TRACKS!

MS music room titles?

i noticed something about the HRtP arranges in Mystic Square's music room, i don't think it's been documented on the wiki so i think it would be interesting to share!

it seems that after every title is a specific "arrange" descriptor.. so here's all of em listed

  1. a sacred lot | PMD arrange ver (as in PMD driver)
  2. eternal shrine maiden | a bit arranged ver.
  3. positive and negative | rapid arrange ver.
  4. soul devoted to the gods | slightly arranged ver.
  5. strange oriental discourse | refreshing arrange ver.
  6. angels legend | strong arrange ver.
  7. oriental magician | groovy arrange ver.
  8. blade of banishment | happy arrange ver.
  9. magic mirror | fantasy arrange ver.
  10. legend of kage | dark arrange ver.
  11. now until the moment you die | laid back arrange ver.
  12. civilization of magic | relaxing arrange ver.
  13. angel of a distant star | carefree arrange ver.
  14. iris | june arrange ver.

this is entirely useless information, but it's some nice trivia for ya.

Story of Eastern Wonderland

oh boy, this game is a STRUGGLE. the main issue here is really the lack of the shift slowdown mechanic that's present in every game after 4 and the shot types being kinda Bad. this game has a pretty harsh power loss penalty upon dying, which makes it very very annoying when marisa ends up killing your 1cc. i do think it's interesting that mima's dialogue is a little more serious than what we're used to in the average touhou game. she really was just some bastard out to get you.

compared to last time's ranking, "Failure As A Person", i'll take "Subpar Gamer". i was never really a top-scorer in general though. all i care about is if i can clear the darn thing, and how little lives i lose.

Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream

it's kind of hard to explain why you love something without sounding repetitive, right? i love PoDD because it has really fun characters, a simple yet silly premise, some incredible bangers, and it has a very odd atmosphere that i just generally really like. gameplay is fine too of course, though it does have its shortcomings (but hey who really cares it was a pc98 game it can be a little bit wonky). i like how PoDD feels really goofy but suddenly it'll hit you with some really gloomy or otherwise intense song that changes the mood entirely, though i guess thats just the pc98 games in general... sometimes i'll see yumemi and i'll be like holy hell shes so badass but then i remember she's just a college professor trying to prove magic is real by beating up everyone in gensokyo LOL

other credits worth mentioning:

favicon edited from the touhou wiki

to my knowledge, the artist of these zun/manga style fake anime gifs is unknown. i believe in the fanbase they're referred to as the "mysterious gifs", and they only exist in low quality. i would have loved to see some kind of bigger animated project closer to zun's style...

Why Utsuho?

she's silly. and badass. she sorta represents my inner chuunibyou in that way. i like that even though she's a little ditzy, she still works a whole ass job and knows what's important to her.

i also find it very interesting that through the whole main dialogue of subterranean animism you probably wouldn't have guessed that she's supposed to be "the dumb one" - like, she was just purely malicious! not to mention she's actually very knowledgable about nuclear energy and does her shit WELL. to me, she has the same silliness as every other touhou character! but that's just my take ^^; i've learned to tolerate the flanderization enough, since really touhou is an ever-changing creature

Hell Raven?

one would think that the name "hell raven" 100% came from her, but the truth is the name "raven" for me came from an old OC that i created when i was quite young (maybe around the age of 8). the "hell" part did actually come from utsuho though. i mean, i guess i Always Liked Ravens so naturally i'd gravitate towards a "raven" character. i don't have an especially deep reason for liking her and making her the basis for my online presence, she's just kinda neat i guess.

yuuka

Yuuka "Fucking Awesome" Kazami is mysterious for many reasons but the important part is that she's cool.

she won the idgaf war in basically every feasible way. fights you in her honk shoo-ass pajamas and takes up 2 entire stages. shows up during mystic square literally because she's bored and wants to go to makai. gets isekai'd into kioh gyoku without explanation just to say shit like "What beautiful weather. Perfect for napping". survives the windows era reboot just so she can go look at some flowers. she literally could not care less about anything and she's one of the most powerful characters. Truly admirable.

in order, here is how i would rank her themes:

  1. faint dream ~ inanimate dream
  2. lovely mound of cherry blossoms ~ flower of japan
  3. gensokyo, past and present ~ flower land
  4. sleeping terror

No hate to sleeping terror.. in fact, i actually used to sorta not like gensokyo past and present. i think at first i thought it might have been too "boring" especially for a character like yuuka, but when i started grinding the fuck out of PoFV it grew on me a lot. i'll admit though the key change carries my opinion pretty hard. it might be surprising to see someone regard lovely mound that highly, but once you realize i'm also a big seihou fan you'll be like "no yeah that tracks". its just very beautiful, what more can i say? that woodwind-like instrument that kicks in at the chorus part is just lovely. faint dream requires no commentary because its just fucking awesome. maybe i feel this way because the actual fight itself is really hype and it definitely matches the energy of the song. peak pc98 boss music right there

reisen

she's an obvious favorite because shes a bunny and shes Purple.

i believe she was actually my *second* favorite when i was first getting into touhou, my first being sakuya. for some odd reason, reisen as a character feels oddly real to me, as in i believe she's actually pretty complex. lunarians and their history are such an odd part of touhou's worldbuilding because of how it directly relates to the outside world, but it makes for some damn good tragic writing. imperishable night really did feel like the early-windows "magnum opus", right? it's rightfully praised a ton as one of the most popular entries in the series, but even so it still feels like words fail to convey just how much it contributed to the setting and characters. taking all of that into account, i think reisen as a character is basically the perfect balance between serious and lighthearted. i can't help but smile when i think about how she found a perfect home in gensokyo with the eientei gang. she might be eirin's errand boy, but it's also very clear that eirin respects her dignity and personhood separate from her previous identity on the moon (definitely evident by the fact shes the only one who calls her Udonge). i didn't mean to make this into a whole dissection of her character, but i just thought it was interesting.

invisible full moon is also such a vibe. i used to rag on it because of how repetitive it was, but maybe the repetition was kind of The Point (with her ability and all). i will never get tired of hearing that chorus kick in with the electric guitar. it's just such a fitting song for her, it's both beautiful and powerful.

mai

i don't actually hate her despite her always being at the bottom of my lists LOL. the "i hate mai" bit came from when i was playing mystic square for the first time and mai said something mean about yuki (Called her a deadweight), so i was like "RUDE!!!!!" so.. that's basically it, its just a silly joke

as Mai's #1 Hater i have to say. i fucking love treacherous maiden ~ judas kiss. i like it a lot more than crimson dead actually, but both themes mirror each other in such a cool way i think. the melodies are structured somewhat similarly, which gives off the feeling of being two parts of a whole. cool, right?

if you're talking about characters that i like a considerably less amount than the others, just look at the three fairies. not that i have anything against them, it's just that when i see them i get the urge to yell "get off of my lawn!!" at them. except for maybe luna. hm maybe this is not the best thing to put in The Mai Section. but the chaos is fun i suppose

i have some things to say about some of the characters. click through the icons for my disogranized thoughts

Tohosort (as of may 2024)

important to note that i love all touhou characters :) this is just a vague order of who i like the most
